How can I apply for a tree from the Tree Trust?
Apply for a complimentary 30 gallon container-grown tree from the Tree Trust. Trees will be planted (only in the area between the street and sidewalk), staked, mulched and fertilized. Deadline for this year's planting is November 28. Fill out a Tree Trust Application to begin the process.

Do I need a permit to cut down a tree on my private property?
Yes, an application must be submitted to remove any tree. Once the Urban Forester inspects the site, a permit will be required under the circumstances outlined in the following resource.

How do I get a permit to remove a tree?
You must first fill out a tree removal application. See the tree removal resource for more information.

If I cut down a tree will the city make me plant trees?
City regulations require that all trees to be removed be evaluated to determine replacement inches. The evaluation determines the amount of inches that must be replaced. Read more about replacement trees.

Do I need a permit to prune trees on my property?
No permit is required for normal pruning of trees. If more than 30% of existing tree foliage is to be removed, a permit may be required. It is recommended to have a professional tree service perform tree pruning.

Can I prune neighbor’s trees hanging over my property?
Yes, you have the right to prune branches hanging into your property. However, you do not have the right to damage the tree (incorrect pruning or removing more than 30% of the tree's foliage). It is highly recommended that you discuss your intentions with the neighbor before any pruning occurs to prevent misunderstandings or accusations of damage or trespass.

Will the city remove or prune trees in the right of way in front of my house?
No, city regulations state that the property owner is responsible for the maintenance of trees in the right of way. The local utility company, CenterPoint Energy, prunes trees that conflict with certain power lines.

How do I get a free tree from the Tree Trust?
Fill out an application. Tree Trust Applications are available online and at the Development Services Office. Normally trees are planted once a year around December or January. Trees are planted on a first-come basis depending on the amount of funds available in the account.

My house is on 2 lots; can I get 2 free trees?
No, only one tree per household.
10.
Can the forester come out and look at my trees and tell me what I need to do to keep them healthy or what is wrong with them?
No, the forester cannot act as a consultant to residents. Please contact a professional tree service or consulting urban forester.
