Parks Master Planning
In 2025, the Parks and Recreation Board and staff completed updates to the 2015 Parks and Open Space Master Plan to reflect changes in our Parks and Recreation system. These updates serve as a guiding document for current and future West U residents and leaders when considering decisions regarding parks and recreation facilities to ensure they evolve with the community over time.
While most of the 2015 plan is relevant, the following items were key updates:
- Demographics and Survey Information
- Park Acquisition (Hughes Park) and new greenspaces (Edloe Pathway and Browning lot)
- Park Assessments/Inventories and Park Classifications included
- Recommendations: Lighting and Shade Analysis in Parks and Greenspaces
- Considerations for evolving needs and interests Pickleball and Public Art added
- Continue to explore connectivity to Braes Bayou and Memorial Park trails
- Safe railroad crossings at Bellaire Blvd by Rec Center and safe pedestrian access to parks

Background
In late 2014, the City presented the results of a citizen survey at a series of town hall meetings, as well as to discuss varying parks and recreation related issues. The survey results and public input assisted the citizen's Parks Master Planning Task Force and the Parks and Recreation Department staff in developing a master plan to guide the City's short and long-range goals over the next 10-15 years.

2020 Survey
The City of West University Place adopted its most recent Parks and Open Space Master Plan in 2015 and completed a 5-year, city-wide follow up survey in December 2020 with Texas A &M Agri-Life extension as recommended in the Master Plan, which was one of 16 major recommendations. The survey contained a large emphasis on Senior Services which is being used for current and future planning.
2025 Survey
The Parks and Recreation Department partnered with a data collection consultant, OnPointe Insights, LLC, to conduct an online survey for residents to provide input on potential improvements to the Recreation Center facility, as part of Phase 2 of the City’s Facilities Master Plan, along with improvements to the tennis/pickleball courts. There were 1,250 respondents.
