[ARCHIVED] Storm Debris Collection

Storm Debris Collection Info

7/19/2024 at 6:30 p.m. - In an effort to provide residents with a better estimate of when crews will be working in their area, the city has broken the collection zones into subzones. Next week the city will begin placing yard signs in the areas that debris collection will occur in the coming days as a reminder to limit street parking which will impede collection efforts. Residents should also expect traffic delays when traveling in collection areas.

As of Friday, July 19, the contractor began collection efforts in Zones 2 and 3. Please see the map below with completed areas.

Tomorrow, July 20, the City’s debris collection vendor will continue collection efforts in Zone 2A, 2B, 2C, and Zone 3.

 Updated Map 7.19

Collection efforts in Zone 1 are substantially complete, with the exception of the 4100 and 4200 block of Albans St. (due to low hanging data lines over the roadway) and along the 4100 and 4200 Blocks of Bissonnet St.  Additionally, there are piles remaining throughout Zone 1 that were not collected during the initial effort.

Please remember that this is a slow process and that residents can help by following the city’s recommendations and notifying their neighbors. Residents are asked to refrain from approaching the contractors to allow them to efficiently complete their tasks as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Important information about the storm debris collection process:

  • This will be the first of two passes for citywide collection. The second pass will be conducted in the coming weeks to ensure residents have time to remove all storm debris from their property.
  • Crews will not remove debris or trim trees on private property.
  • It is imperative that residents do not park on the street, especially vehicles blocking storm related debris piles. City staff are working with the vendor to make contact with homeowners who have vehicles on the street but unsuccessful attempts to make contact could delay this process and may cause collection piles to be skipped and collected during the second citywide collection in a couple of weeks.
  • Please separate tree debris from construction debris. This will help crews to sort and collect debris more efficiently.
  • Depending on the amount of storm debris in each zone, crews could be in one zone longer or shorter than another.
  • All debris should be placed in the City right-of-way (areas between the curb and sidewalk).
    • Do not block sidewalks.
    • Do not place piles over water meters or near fire hydrants.
    • Do not place piles under low-hanging utility lines or tree canopies.
    • Do not place items in the street.
  • Regular trash, recycling, and bagged yard waste should only be placed curbside on your regular collection days. The storm debris collection vendor will not collect these items. Please ensure they’re clearly separated.
  • Please utilize extreme caution when driving near the debris hauling operations. Plan to take alternate routes around the debris haulers whenever possible.

To ensure residents receive timely information, the city will provide daily updates on the status of collection efforts.

7/16/2024 at 5:30 p.m. - Tomorrow, July 17, the City’s third-party vendor will continue their operations in Zone 1 and Zone 2. Please note that the same truck will not pick up both tree debris and construction debris. Two separate trucks will handle these pickups to ensure efficient and timely service.

  • Tree Debris Pickup: Place tree debris in separate piles in the right-of-way for collection. Ensure that the debris is not obstructing roadways or sidewalks.
  • Construction Debris Pickup: Place construction debris in a different pile from tree debris. This will help crews to sort and collect the debris more efficiently.
  • Safety: Ensure that debris piles are accessible and do not pose a safety hazard to pedestrians or vehicles.
