[ARCHIVED] Winter Storm Enzo Updates

Winter Storm Enzo

1/22/25 10:45 a.m. - The City of West University Place will resume most city operations at noon today. City Hall, the Community Building/Senior Services, and the Public Works Administration Offices will be open until 5:30 p.m. The Recreation Center will reopen at noon and close at 6 p.m. All classes, programs, and camps held at the Community Building/Senior Services and Recreation Center have been suspended until Thursday.

As a reminder, solid waste, recycling, and yard waste will not be collected today due to facility closures enacted by the city’s third-party collection vendors. Thursday and Friday collection will resume per the normal collection schedule.

The city urges residents to use caution if travel is necessary as ice may still be present on roads and sidewalks.

1/21/25 2:10 p.m. - Winter Storm Enzo has turned West University Place into a winter wonderland, and the National Weather Service is forecasting we are not in the clear just yet. Temperatures are expected to get below freezing this evening however, with the anticipation of sunshine and clear skies tomorrow, we’re hoping to resume city operations by noon on Wednesday, January 22. This could change if weather and road conditions do not improve as expected.

The modified collection schedule has been provided below:

  • Wednesday, January 22 - Due to facility closures enacted by the city's third-party yard waste, solid waste, and recycling drop off vendors, there will be no collection tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday recycling and yard waste will be collected on your next regularly scheduled collection day.
  • Thursday, January 23 - Normal collection
  • Friday, January 24 - Normal collection

The West U Recreation Center will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22. All programs, classes, and camps have been suspended until Thursday.

While we’re having SNOW much fun, the city encourages residents to stay home, cozy, and safe. Road conditions are still considered hazardous at this time.

1/20/25 11:34 a.m. - The National Weather Service has forecasted that Winter Storm Enzo will bring winter precipitation and blizzard-like conditions beginning this evening through Tuesday night. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of city employees and residents, all city facilities will be closed on Tuesday, January 21. At this time, the city plans to resume operations at Noon on Wednesday, January 22. However, this could change if weather and road conditions do not improve as expected.

The modified collection schedule has been provided below. All residents will receive one collection this week.

  • Wednesday, January 22 – Monday/Tuesday recycling and yard waste collection
  • Thursday, January 23 – Normal collection
  • Friday, January 24 – Normal collection

The West University Place Recreation Center will be closed Tuesday, January 21, and Wednesday, January 22. All classes, programs, and camps have currently been suspended until Thursday, which may be extended, depending on weather conditions.

Residents are encouraged to complete their preparations by this evening. Please remember that the irrigation system is the responsibility of the property owner and the City cannot work on this system. You would need to contact your irrigation service company for any repairs. A simple precaution to prevent costly repairs and wasting of water is to turn off your irrigation system at the backflow preventer and to make sure the irrigation lines are properly insulated. Additionally, be sure to drain your system and turn off your sprinkler system at the control panel. Systems that remain charged or with water in the pipes can burst from the expansion of frozen water.

If you’re unsure of how to drain your irrigation system, please consult your irrigation service provider. You can also search “how-to” videos online on how to winterize your irrigation system. The City has also provided a “how-to” YouTube video.

Also, remember the four P’s of cold weather protection:

People:

  • Stay inside if possible.
  • If you need to go out, dress in layers with gloves and a hat.
  • Ensure you have food, water, and medicine available.

Pipes:

  • Properly winterize any exposed pipes, faucets, and plumbing to prevent damage.
  • Drain and disconnect outdoor hoses.
  • If leaving out of town, drain and shut off the main water supply to prevent damage.

Pets:

  • Bring pets inside.
  • Keep adequate food and water available.

Plants:

  • Bring potted plants inside or store them in the garage near the interior wall.
  • For cold-sensitive outdoor plants, put down extra mulch or consider covering them with cloth fabric.

Please take the following safety precautions:

  • Ensure your Carbon Monoxide Detector is working.
  • If you plan to use a fireplace, ensure the flue is open and venting properly.
  • Never leave a space heater running while you’re asleep.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended.
