Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvement Project
In February 2025, the City will open bids to construct floodwater resiliency improvements at the Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure that West U’s sewer service remains operational in another Hurricane Harvey-type event.
The planned improvements will include:
- Elevate a new control building to 14.15 feet above the 500-year flood level. The control building houses the equipment (motor control center) that helps operates the plant and ensures staff and critical systems are well above flood levels.
- Raise the height of our emergency power generator to be 5.3 feet above the 500-year flood level.
- Elevate the lift-station equipment and controls 5.3 feet above the 500-year flood level.
- Install a new lift-station with submersible pumps which replaces the existing intake basin and screw pumps that are susceptible to floodwater related issues.
- Replace main electricity lines from being mounted on a pole to concrete pad-mounted transformers to increase the resiliency to wind related storms.
When completed, these improvements will protect critical equipment, staff, and sewer plant operations from disruptions during flooding and other storm-related events.
Current Status as of February 2026: Under construction
